Chapter 6: Sharing Control & Giving Choices.
In this chapter, Doyle argues that when the instructor is not willing to share the power with the students, then the students will be the victims.
Doyle starts the chapter by explaining how our students make their choices. It is about sharing power with our students. (Doyle, 2011, page 77)
It might look like the power is always with the teacher but it is important to share this power with our students in order for them to learn.
There should be some flexibility in matters like attendance, tardiness, late work retesting and rewriting of papers. If the instructor is not willing to
share the power, then students will be the loser thus affecting their performance. (Doyle, 2011, page 81).
Office hours for meeting with students to be set in such a way those students are happy with. It is not that the entire class will want to meet the instructor at the same day. It’s only for those, like me, who have doubts.
In conclusion, the author states that sometimes students may
resist in sharing power. The reason is that they are used to the teacher –
centered teaching which is being transformed to a learner – centered teaching (Doyle, 2011, page 87).
